Alfred George Bailey

Alfred George Bailey is a distinguished London-based writer and film director, celebrated for his compelling storytelling and visually rich filmmaking. His creative journey began in the vibrant environment of his father’s North West London gospel church, where he played the drums. At the age of 16, Alfred left the church to join a Jazz Funk band as a percussionist and later as a drummer, performing alongside his friend, the world-renowned saxophonist Courtney Pine CBE.

From a young age, Alfred exhibited a keen interest in art, photography, and films, greatly influenced by his older brother, an amateur photographer who gifted him his first stills 35m film camera. Over the past 25 years, Alfred's photography, which spans musicians, dancers, reportage, portraiture and especially documentary photography, has been celebrated for its intimacy and emotional depth. This profound sensitivity seamlessly transitioned into his filmmaking, imbuing his films with a distinctive personal touch.

FILM DIRECTING AND SCRIPTWRITING CAREER:

Alfred made his directorial debut with the documentary feature film Gregory Porter: Don't Forget Your Music, serving as director, producer and cinematographer. This documentary, which follows the Grammy-winning singer Gregory Porter over four years, chronicles his rise from humble beginnings in Bakersfield, California, to international stardom. The film received widespread acclaim for its heartfelt narrative and Alfred’s ability to capture the essence of Porter's journey.

His second feature film, Show Me The Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall, further established Alfred's reputation in the industry. This critically acclaimed documentary won the Grierson British Documentary Award and numerous other accolades including best documentary at The San Francisco International Film Festival. As both director and cinematographer, Alfred charted the fascinating life of the infamous music and documentary photographer Jim Marshall, who captured some of the most iconic images of world-famous musicians and pivotal moments in American history. The film was praised for its depth, storytelling, and visual elegance.
